BIG SCREEN SOUTHEND

Date: 2025

Project type: Live/competition brief

THE CHALLENGE

Focal Point Gallery is South Essex’s only public contemporary art gallery, open to all. They believe in building a community and a safe space

to enjoy art and the creative process, where everyone is valued.

Big Screen Southend is a purpose-built display screen which opened in 2013 for the presentation of artist commissions, live transmissions,

and short and feature films relative to the cultural context of Southend, South Essex and further afield. A programme of curated or newly commissioned artist moving image is screened daily in the public setting of Elmer Square, adjacent to Focal Point Gallery.

Focal Point Gallery are looking for a new visual identity for the Big Screen Southend. They are looking to replace the image slides they currently have that serve as transitioning points between the blocks of content they screen. Each of the slides should be easy to differentiate as they all refer to different projects, while maintaining an overall cohesive identity. Colour, readability and ability to inform need to be considered.

About FPG.jpg

I developed an identity that reflects the client’s emphasis on community, using building block inspired imagery to symbolise how individuals come together to create a positive, supportive environment.

To maintain cohesion with the existing brand, I incorporated the established colour palette from Focal Point Gallery, alongside their typography and logo. While keeping the overall look consistent, I introduced subtle variations in layout and composition to ensure each design feels distinct yet connected.

This was a competition brief in which my designs were chosen.
